The Concept:

Times are changing in relation to the purchase and acquisition of Custom Land from Ni-Vanuatu in Vanuatu. With the advent of land purchases being in many cases ridiculously below valuation, the Ni-Vanuatu are now conscious of on sell pricing to foreigners. The Ni-Vanuatu are also looking for a way to extend their future for their children…and their children. The current form of land purchase by way of monies all paid up front seems on the face of it, splendid for the Custom Land Owner. But not so. This money is often put into trucks, toys and gadgets that within a five year period, is no longer beneficial or can’t be afforded the upkeep.

This form of negotiation and subsequent purchase/lease of land does not insure a future for the Ni-Vanuatu. The concept behind A.R.P. is to pave the way for a longer and lasting relationship between the Custom Land Owner and/or business owner by nurturing joint ventures in various business scenarios.

One example is Agriculture. The Custom Land Owner could produce cattle, copra or timber for export and domestic use, given the support financially along with the management expertise.

In the hospitality industry, a joint venture for the resort industry, where the land is offered up by the Custom Land Owner for a specific project to be built and where a percentage for the net profits, plus where applicable, employment, can be generated. Here there is a marriage for the common good.

The Chief, villagers and/or land owners have a sense of dignity and purpose about life, and at the same time, earn a living and can look forward to a productive future.

The bond would be strong for at least a 75 year period. You could say – everybody wins!

Naturally, secure legal documents and agreements would be air tight and overseen by both a Ni-Vanuatu and foreign legal team. Done correctly, these agreements would stand up in any court in the land and are taken very seriously.

I believe this way of thinking would eradicate much of the bitterness and discontent that is brewing beneath the surface in the beautiful country and pave the way for long lasting and productive relationships.

After numerous discussions with various Custom Land Owners, Village Chiefs and affected Ni-Vanuatu’s, this concept and its appreciation there of, has been welcomed with enormous enthusiasm. It can work and would work with the right attitude and honest determination to succeed.
